ACROD is currently establishing the Companion Card in Western Australia.
The WA Companion Card is based on a Victorian initiative and provides the companion of a person with disabilities with free entry to recreation, sport and arts events and venues.
Many people with disabilities who require the assistance and support of a companion to go to the movies, football, concert or a recreational centre for instance, have to buy two tickets - one for themselves and one for their companion. The Companion Card provides a secure and easy way for people with disabilities to attend venues and events without having to pay for their companion as well.
The Card will be developed in two stages. The first part of the project involves signing up as many businesses as possible as affiliates to the scheme. ACROD will market the scheme to key business and venue owners and operators to develop a broad selection of choices for people with disabilities. A database of these venues will be established to keep card holders informed of participating businesses.
Once affiliates have been secured, the second phase will get underway.
Stage two will inform people with disabilities and key stakeholders about the card for example, how to apply for it and eligibility criteria. It is anticipated that the card will be available in 2006. Register to receive information on the Companion Card.
More information about the Companion Card will be available from this website in December. Until then you may wish to contact Helen Granville, Manager, Companion Card on 1800 617 337.
